A National Survey on the Use of Loanwords in Japanese

Outline

The purpose of this survey was to identify the penetration levels of loanwords between Japanese people. Of the items in the survey results, "understanding ratio" was used in the Proposal for the Paraphrasing of Loanwords as a measure of the difficulty of understanding each loanword.

Description of the survey [Details]

Number of examined words: 405 words
Number of surveyed people: 750 people on 120 words, and 2,111-2,118 people on the remaining 295 words
Population: Male and female individuals from different parts of Japan no less than 16 years old
Sampling method: Stratified two-stage random sampling
Survey method: Individual interviews by researchers
Survey period: From November 2002 through August 2004
